Trending Videos around the World: Tweeting Badgers to the Best of Vine

One of my favourite things to do for the Nat&Marie livestreaming show was dig up some of the trending videos from around the world for our weekly trending topics segment.

Video is such a great medium. Not only does it affect numerous of your senses at once, but it’s also curious to see what kind of videos tend to trend in certain parts of the world; and then to sit back and try to contemplate the why. Why is this trending and will it get picked up by the rest of the world and go viral?

Scouring trending videos around the world is also how we brought you PSY’s Gangnam Style on Nat&Marie before the mainstream media started to proclaim its virality and turn it into an international hysterical sensation.

So without further ado, here are three trending videos from Johannesburg to India.

1) Best Vines of July 2013

Trending in: United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, etc. (it’s gone global)

So Vine’s YouTube Channel naturally would take advantage of the plethora of content being produced on its app, and this video of the Best of Vines July 2013 is considered one of the top shared videos in many areas around the world.

It also introduced me to a whole new world of Vine content creators. Seriously, people have on-going series on Vine, which would make sense I suppose. People have Tumblrs around various themes, they tweet under various personas, and create YouTube series on just about any niche imaginable. Why not a Vine micro-video series?

Like this one: How to be a Mean Brother. He has put out five episodes so far. And he’s pretty mean. I’m waiting for his sister to actually catch on with anticipation with one of these episodes…

2) The World’s first LIVE Tweeting Badger

Trending in: South Africa

The narrator in this video says a line that almost made me spit my coffee out of my nose: “It’s been long suspected that you don’t need opposable thumbs or a formal education to tweet up a frenzy.”

No truer words spoken?

In this case, he’s talking about the Johannesburg Zoo’s latest social media manager – BG the honeybadger. It’s freaking adorable.

You can follow the “World’s First LIVE Tweeting Badger” on Twitter @zootweetslive or #tweetingbadger.

3) India’s Dancing Superstar: Ep – 17 – Loyola’s Dream Team’s amazing performance

Trending in: India

Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a video about: a) a reality show and b) dancing would be trending in India.

There isn’t much more to say about this outside of the fact that this reality contest show by STAR Plus, India’s Dancing Superstar, premiered its first season in April and invites the Bollywood-obsessed nation to show off their own dancing skills. Any age and dance genre is invited to apply! But it’s a little weird that no prize for the winner has been clearly defined as of yet…

I'm a journalist, producer and host who thought I would get into "traditional" broadcasting until the lusty call of the Internet drew me in. I've been fortunate enough to have launched 10 web series about a wide range of niches, like: Greek culture, Wines, India and Battlestar Galactica (BSGcast FTW!). But these days I love being one-half of Nat&Marie, exploring Internet Culture and dissecting how the web affects IRL and vice versa. Instagram's my vice and Technoviking is my home boy!
